…the Irish Constituent Assembly lasted from January 21, 1919 to December 5, 1922. It was held in Dublin by 73 members of the Sinn Féin republican party, which sought independence, out of the 105 Irish MPs elected in the British general election of December 1918. However, many MPs were unable to attend, including 36 who were in prison in the UK, so only 27 were able to attend. It succeeded the republic proclaimed in the Easter Rising of 1916, adopted a declaration of independence, a provisional constitution, a democratic platform, and elected de Valera, who was in prison, as president. …

…A treaty signed on December 6, 1921 between a delegation of the Irish National Assembly and a delegation of the British government. It ended the Irish War of Independence, which began in January 1919 (truce in July 1921), and stipulated that Ireland would retain the same status as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand as a dominion within the British Empire, and would be called the Irish Free State. However, the Northern Ireland Assembly, which had already been in place since June 1921 based on the Government of Ireland Act enacted in December 1920, continued to exist, and it stipulated that the border between the north and south would be re-established by a border commission consisting of one representative from each side, and a chairman appointed by the British government. …
