Mube - Mube

An evergreen vine of the Akebiaceae family (APG classification: Akebiaceae). It is also called Tokiwaakebi or Ube. The leaves are alternate and palmately compound with 3-7 leaflets. There are no stipules. It is monoecious. In April and May, it produces racemes and produces 3-7 unisexual white flowers. There are six half-open sepals. There are no petals, and the male flowers have six stamens fused together at the filaments. The female flowers have six pseudostamens and three carpels. The fruits are large and ripen reddish purple, but do not dehisce. There are many shiny black seeds inside. It commonly grows in the mountains and fields, and is distributed from the Kanto region to Honshu west of the mainland, Okinawa, the Korean peninsula, and Taiwan. The flesh is sweet and edible, and the roots and stems are used as diuretics. The tree is sometimes used as a hedge or bonsai.

アケビ科（APG分類：アケビ科）の常緑藤本(とうほん)（つる植物）。トキワアケビ、ウベともいう。葉は互生し、3～7小葉からなる掌状複葉。托葉(たくよう)はない。雌雄同株。4～5月、総状花序をつくり、単性の白色花を3～7個開く。萼片(がくへん)は6枚で半開する。花弁はなく、雄花は6本の雄しべが花糸の部分で合着する。雌花は6本の仮雄蕊(かゆうずい)と3枚の心皮がある。果実は大きく、紅紫色に熟すが、裂開しない。中に黒くつやのある種子が多数ある。山野に普通に生え、関東地方以西の本州から沖縄、および朝鮮半島、台湾に分布する。果肉は甘く食用となり、根、茎は利尿薬とする。樹は生け垣、盆栽に用いることがある。
