A former town in Kitakoma County in northwest Yamanashi Prefecture. Most of it is in the mountainous area north of the Akaishi Mountains. The main settlement is on the right bank of the Kamanashi River, with National Route 20 running through it. Rice, livestock, vegetables, and fruit cultivation such as grapes are practiced here. The western part belongs to the Southern Alps National Park. It is the trailhead for Mount Komagatake (Kaikoma). In November 2004, it merged with the towns of Suwa, Takane, Nagasaka, Akeno, Oizumi, and Takekawa in Kitakoma County to become a city, Hokuto City. 138.02 km2 . Population: 4,373 (2003). 山梨県北西部,北巨摩(きたこま)郡の旧町。大部分は赤石山脈北部の山地。主集落は釜無(かまなし)川右岸にあり国道20号線が縦貫。米作,畜産,野菜栽培,ブドウなどの果樹栽培が行われる。西部は南アルプス国立公園に属する。駒ヶ岳(甲斐駒)の登山口。2004年11月北巨摩郡須玉町,高根町,長坂町,明野村,大泉村,武川村と合併し市制,北杜市となる。138.02km2。4373人(2003)。
