A state (land) in western Germany. Its capital is Mainz. Its area is 19,836 km2. Its population is 3.95 million (1995). It was formed by the constitution of May 18, 1947 from the northern half of the French occupied area formed by order of the French military government on August 30, 1946. It consists of the former Bavarian Pfalz, the Prussian counties of Koblenz and Trier, the four districts of the state of Hesse-Nassau, and the left bank of the Rhine in Hesse. The center of the state is the middle Rhine region in the south of the Rhine and the Pfalz, but because the state border was drawn without regard for historical and economic connections, Mainz and Worms lost their suburbs on the right bank of the Rhine, and Ludwigshafen was cut off from Mannheim.
