Free nerve ending

…the central nervous system is made up of neurons in the central nervous system that form synaptic connections with the central nervous system. The peripheral nerve endings are either free (such as pain fibers), encapsulated (such as lamellar corpuscles and Meissner's corpuscles), or connected to sensory cells. Sensory information from the skin, muscles, fascia, joints, periosteum, internal organs, blood vessels, and other parts of the body is transmitted to the central nervous system by the neurons in the sensory ganglia.
