After 15 years of traveling around Ireland, devoting himself to spreading Christianity and building monasteries, in 563 he traveled with 12 disciples to the Scottish island of Iona, where he founded a monastery and worked to educate the Picts. The strict rules established by the monastery were followed by many Irish monasteries in Scotland, England, and other parts of Western Europe, but were later replaced by the more relaxed rules of the Benedictine Order. …
