Military Academy Incident

In November 1934, young officers of the Imperial Way faction were arrested and court-martialed on suspicion of inciting the cadets of the Imperial Japanese Army to plot a coup. This incident is also known as the November Incident. On the 20th, about 30 young army officers, led by Captain Takaji Muranaka, adjutant of the 26th Infantry Regiment, gathered at Takatei in Shinjuku, Tokyo. They plotted to use the cadets as the execution force of a coup, to assassinate the prime minister, senior vassals, and leaders of financial conglomerates at the opening ceremony of the extraordinary Diet on the 28th, to create chaos, and to establish a reformist military government under martial law. A tip-off led the military to find out, and Muranaka and others were arrested by the military police on the 22nd. The military court martial decided not to indict them for lack of evidence, but the military suspended Muranaka, Lieutenant Taro Kataoka attached to the Imperial Japanese Army Academy, and First Class Paymaster Isobe Asaichi attached to the First Field Artillery Regiment. The Military Academy Incident was the fuse that led to the Aizawa Incident and the February 26 Incident in the conflict between the Control Faction and the Imperial Way Faction. After World War II, it was the accepted theory that Tsuji Masanobu, an instructor at the Military Academy, was the one who informed on the plot by Muranaka and others. The Military Academy Incident was not announced by the Ministry of the Army until April 1935.

1934年 11月，皇道派の青年将校が陸軍士官学校生徒を扇動してクーデターを計画したという容疑で逮捕され，軍法会議にかけられた事件。十一月事件とも呼ばれる。 20日に東京，新宿の宝亭に歩兵第 26連隊大隊副官村中孝次大尉を中心に陸軍青年将校約 30人が集り，士官学校生徒をクーデターの実行部隊として，28日の臨時議会開院式を期して首相，重臣，財閥首脳などを暗殺して混乱を起し，戒厳令下に革新軍政府の樹立をはかる謀議を行なったのが密告によって軍の知るところとなり，22日に村中らが憲兵隊によって検挙された。軍法会議は証拠不十分として不起訴処分にしたが，軍は村中，士官学校付片岡太郎中尉，野砲兵第一連隊付一等主計磯部浅一を停職処分に付した。士官学校事件は，統制派と皇道派の対立のなかで，相沢事件，二・二六事件を招く導火線となった。村中らの謀議を密告したのは辻政信士官学校教官であったというのが，第2次世界大戦後の定説となっている。士官学校事件は，35年4月になって，初めて陸軍省によって発表された。
