An invertebrate statocyst. In crustaceans, it is located at the base of the antennae, and its inner surface contains a group of sensory cells with sensory hairs that arise from them. The statocyst usually contains a secreted statolith or several grains of sand taken in from the outside world. When the animal's body is tilted, the statolith or sand grain comes into contact with the sensory hairs, which are distorted, exciting the sensory cells and generating an impulse. The physiological function of the statocyst in the spiny lobster in particular has been well studied.
