...The monastery developed rapidly, and by 800 had become the intellectual centre of Gaul, and its manuscript house, in particular, has produced a great number of manuscripts. Under the abbot Adalardus, a central figure in the political life of the court, the monastery numbered 300 monks and 150 servants (in 822). By order of Louis the Elder, the monastery also founded the Corbeia nova, or Corbai, in Westphalia, in western Germany, with Adalardus as its first abbot, just as in the mother monastery.

…the abbot of the Abbey of Corbie in France. He was a monk there, but succeeded his brother Adalardus (c. 751-826) as abbot. In 818 he joined the rebellion of Bernard, King of Italy, and went into exile with his brother.
