The Fall of Rome - Roman History

A general term for the various historical views that have developed around the issue of the fall of Rome. Combined with the Roman idea that Rome was a symbol of an excellent civilization and order, the fall of Rome has been seen not simply as the disappearance of an empire, but as the collapse of the ancient world as a whole, and even as a typical example of the fall and replacement of civilizations in general. This issue has given rise to many theories that reflect the consciousness of each era, such as theories about the causes of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, the causes of the decline of ancient culture, and the boundaries of ancient and medieval times. In this case, Rome usually refers to the so-called Western Roman Empire, but just as there are many theories about the causes of its fall, there is no consensus on the traditional date of 476, when the Western Roman Empire disappeared.

ローマ没落の問題をめぐって展開されたさまざまな歴史観の総称。ローマを一つの優れた文明･秩序の象徴とみなすローマ理念と相まって，ローマ没落が単に一帝国の消滅というにとどまらず，古代世界全般の崩壊，さらには文明一般の没落･交替の典型としてとらえられてきたため，この問題はローマ帝国盛衰原因論，古代文化没落原因論，古代中世境界論などの形で，おのおのの時代意識を反映させつつ多くの考察を生み出した。なお，この場合のローマとは通例いわゆる西ローマ帝国を指すが，没落原因論が多様であると同様，没落時期についても西ローマ帝国が消滅した476年という伝統的年代で一致しているわけではない。
