... The English word "element," the French word "élément," and the German word "Element" all come from the Latin word "elementum." There are several theories about the origin of this word, but it is certain that it is derived from the idea of ​​stoicheion (plural stoicheia), which represents the letters of the Greek alphabet. In other words, the word el-em-en-tum may have been created from the l, m, and n that come at the beginning of the second row of the 20 Latin letters when they are arranged in two rows, or it may have been created by corrupting the ph of elephantum (meaning a letter made of ivory) to m. In any case, there is no doubt that the word elementum originated from the connection with the letters, following the Greek example.
