Meister Francke

Meister Francke
German late Gothic painter, c. 1380-1430. A painter-monk belonging to the Dominican monastery in Hamburg, he was one of the representatives of the International Gothic style or "Soft Style" of the first half of the 15th century. Influenced by Flemish and French manuscript art, his works make extensive use of graceful curves against a gold background, showing decorative beauty, but at the same time exude a mystical religious feeling that was characteristic of the period. In addition to several altarpieces, a few small tableaux such as "Christ the Suffering" remain.
