Vantongerloo, G.

…De Stijl (Dutch for "The Style") was the title of the magazine, and eventually became the name of the movement. The first members were van Doesburg, Mondrian, architect Oud, and poet Antonie Kok. They were joined by sculptor Georges Vantongerloo (1886-1965) and architect and furniture designer Rietveld, and as the movement spread to Germany, France, Italy, and Belgium after 1919, Richter, Schwitters, Arp, and Brancusi joined. They argued that visual arts, which express the universal spirit of the modern age, should have a universal visual language as a means of expression, and expanded their activities from painting to sculpture and architecture, having a major influence on contemporary European art and architecture, including the Bauhaus. …
