A region in the northwest of the Korean Peninsula. One of the eight Korean provinces, also known as the Kansai region. Currently part of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, it is divided into three provinces: North Pyongan Province (capital city: Sinuiju), South Pyongan Province (capital city: Pyongsong; separated from the northern suburbs of Pyongyang in 1968), and Jagang Province (newly established in 1949; capital city: Kanggye), as well as two directly controlled municipalities: Pyongyang and Nampo. [Nature] From the north to the east, most of the island is covered by rugged mountain ranges, such as the 1,500-2,000-m-high Nangrim Mountains and their branch ranges, the Diyuryeong Mountains and the Myohyang Mountains, but this is in stark contrast to the endless, flat coastal plains that stretch along the Yellow Sea.
