Pyongan Province (English spelling)

Japanese: 平安道 - へいあんどう（英語表記）P‘yŏngan‐do

A region in the northwest of the Korean Peninsula. One of the eight Korean provinces, also known as the Kansai region. Currently part of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, it is divided into three provinces: North Pyongan Province (capital city: Sinuiju), South Pyongan Province (capital city: Pyongsong; separated from the northern suburbs of Pyongyang in 1968), and Jagang Province (newly established in 1949; capital city: Kanggye), as well as two directly controlled municipalities: Pyongyang and Nampo.

From the north to the east, most of the island is covered by rugged mountain ranges, such as the 1,500-2,000-m-high Nangrim Mountains and their branch ranges, the Diyuryeong Mountains and the Myohyang Mountains, but this is in stark contrast to the endless, flat coastal plains that stretch along the Yellow Sea.

　北部から東部にかけて，本道の大部分は標高1500～2000mの狼林山脈やその支脈の狄踰嶺（てきゆれい）山脈･妙香山脈などの険峻な山地によって覆われているが，黄海沿岸には平坦な海岸平野がえんえんと続き，よい対照をなしている。
