Located in southern Iwate Prefecture, this city occupies the entire basin of the Iwai River and the Satetsu River, both tributaries of the Kitakami River. It was incorporated as a city in 1948. The city is located near the confluence of the Iwai River with the Kitakami River in the lower reaches. In the early modern period, it developed as a castle town for a branch of the Date clan and a post station on the Oshu Kaido road. The Tohoku Shinkansen, Tohoku Main Line, and Tohoku Expressway run through the city, and the Ofunato Line branches off from it, making it the core city in the southern part of the prefecture. Since the 1970s, industrial parks have been developed, and the city's manufacturing shipments were 309.5 billion yen (2003), the second highest in the prefecture, and electrical and mechanical industries are located here. The lower reaches of the Iwai River have often suffered from flooding, but the levees have been strengthened through the Kitakami Special Development Project. It is home to the Genbikei Gorge (a scenic spot and natural monument). In September 2005, the towns of Hanaizumi in Nishiiwai County, Senmaya, Daito, Higashiyama, Murone, and Kawasaki in Higashiiwai County were incorporated, and in September 2011, the town of Fujisawa in Higashiiwai County was incorporated. 岩手県南部，北上川の支流磐井川及び砂鉄川全流域を占める市。1948年市制。磐井川下流部の北上川との合流地付近に市街がある。近世には伊達氏支藩の城下町，奥州街道の宿駅として発達した。東北新幹線，東北本線，東北自動車道が通じ，大船渡線が分岐，県南地区の中核都市をなしている。昭和50年代から工業団地の造成が進み，製造品出荷額は3095億円（2003）で県内２位，電気，機械工業が立地している。磐井川下流部はしばしば水害を受けたが，北上特定開発により堤防が強化された。厳美渓（名勝・天然記念物）がある。2005年９月西磐井郡花泉町，東磐井郡千厩町，大東町，東山町，室根村，川崎村を，2011年９月東磐井郡藤沢町を編入。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。1256.42km²。12万7642人（2010）。
