…After returning to England (1729), he wrote several tragic stories that show the influence of his visit, including his masterpiece, “Zaire” (1732). “Histoire de Charles XII” (1730), conceived during his stay in England, was his first historical work, and expressed his basic view of history, that great men are not victorious in battle, but those who contribute to the progress and happiness of mankind. The following “Lettres philosophiques” (English edition 1733, French edition 1734) was “the first bomb to be dropped on the old French regime,” harshly criticizing French politics, religion, philosophy, etc., based on his reports of what he had seen and heard in England. …
