〘 noun 〙① The role of listening to what others have to say. Also, that person. Listener. ※Kakushihon Ukiyoburo (1809-13), 3 "I do n't want to listen to people's complaints. "② During the Edo period, this role was sent to Nagasaki from the domains of Kyushu and Chugoku to inform them of emergencies such as foreign enemies. Two people were sent from each domain. ③ = Kikiban (listener) ※Rakuhoshu (1728), 5 "At that time, the duties of the castle officials, the listeners, were called Kikiban." ④ Another name for "Metsuke (eye attendant)."
