Heian Shrine

Japanese: 平安神宮 - へいあんじんぐう
Heian Shrine

Located in Nishitenno-cho, Okazaki, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. The deities enshrined are Emperor Kanmu and Emperor Komei. It was founded in 1895 (Meiji 28) as a government-sponsored shrine dedicated to Emperor Kanmu. The same year marked 1,100 years since Emperor Kanmu founded Heian-kyo in 794 (Enryaku 13). Then, in 1940 (Showa 15), Emperor Komei, the last emperor of Heian-kyo, was enshrined.

The worship hall is 5/8 the size of the Daigokuden in Heian-kyo, and together with the Shinmon gate modeled after the Otenmon Gate, it is a colorful building painted crimson red that recalls the Heian period. Surrounding this magnificent shrine is a shrine garden of about 33,000 square meters, famous for its pale pink weeping cherry blossoms. The annual festival is held on April 15th. The famous Jidai Festival is held on October 22nd, commemorating the transfer of the capital to Heian. A magnificent procession is held that recreates the customs of the 1,000 years from the Heian period to the Meiji Restoration.
