However, Darius I (3rd emperor, 522-486 BC) decided to issue an imperial coinage and had two coins minted, named after himself, the dareikon (gold coin) and the siglos (silver coin). Both coins bear the image of the king galloping on his knees with a spear and a bow on the obverse, and are of extremely high quality. They were produced until the end of the empire. …

…After ascending to the throne, he immediately began administrative reforms, dividing the country into 20 (or more than 20) provinces and appointing satraps to them, strengthening the inspection system, and at the same time, he set the amount of tax to be paid by each province to stabilize the national finances. He also minted the first two types of imperial coins, gold and silver, and the gold coins were called Dareikos and were famous among the Greeks. He paid particular attention to the development of the transportation system, establishing a relay system on the main highways of the country, digging a canal at Suez linking the Nile River with the Red Sea, and ordering the Greek Skylax to explore a sea route from India to Egypt.
