In the Middle Ages, this referred to rice paid as annual tax in manors and kokuga territories. It was calculated by multiplying the todai (annual tax collection rate) per tan by the area, but was called bunhu (rice paddy), bunsen (sen), bunken (silk), buniroku (iron), etc., depending on what was paid. In the Edo period, it referred to the kokudaka (rice yield) of cultivated land determined by land surveys, and was also calculated by multiplying the kokumori (stone mound) by the number of tan, but was often used when fields, farmland, and houses were classified into upper, middle, and lower grades and tallied (in land survey books).
