Aichi River

Japanese: 愛知川 - えちがわ
Aichi River
A river in eastern Shiga Prefecture. The Chaya River originating from Mt. Miike (1,247m) in the Suzuka Mountains and the Kanzaki River originating from Mt. Gozaisho (1,210m) join at Yuzurio in Higashiomi City to become the Aichi River. It flows northwest from the top of the mountain (Yamakami) through the Eigenji Dam and forms a plain before flowing into Lake Biwa. It is 37km long. Kimigabata, upstream of the Miike River, a tributary, is said to be the birthplace of woodworkers (→woodworkers). A fan-shaped plain spreads from the top of the mountain to Aisho Town, forming a delta at the river mouth. Many new rice fields were developed near the river mouth during the Edo period, and the upstream river valley was used by Omi merchants on the Ise trade route since the Middle Ages. National comprehensive development began in 1947, and the Eigenji Dam was completed in Aiya (→Eigenji) in Eigenji Town in 1972, and is used for power generation and irrigation. The entire upstream area, including the dam, belongs to Suzuka Quasi-National Park.

Aichi River

The former area of western Aisho Town in central Shiga Prefecture. It is on the east bank of the midstream of the Aichi River. It was incorporated as a town in 1909. It merged with Toyokuni Village in 1955. In 2006 it merged with Hassho Town to form Aisho Town. The Aichi River in the central area prospered as a post town on the Nakasendo road during the Edo period. Along with Omihachiman City, it is known as the birthplace of Omi merchants. Rice is grown in the rural areas, and the majority of industry is textile, focusing on linen weaving. Omi Jofu (→ Jofu) is designated as a national traditional craft. Many ancient documents and historical materials remain at Toyomitsu Shrine (its four-legged gate is a national important cultural property).
