The book of Nahum

It is one of the twelve minor prophets in the Old Testament, and is a prophecy by the prophet Nahum from El Kosh in Judah about the destruction of the Assyrian capital of Nineveh (612 B.C.). Although it only spans three chapters, the fragmentary prophecies in chapters 1:12 to 2:1 and 2:3 are said to date back more than ten years. Apart from this section, the "Iroha Song" in chapter 1 and chapter 2 are a hymn to a gracious God who punishes those who deserve punishment, and a prophecy of the fall of Nineveh to the Neo-Babylonian Empire. The prophetic poem, which likens Assyria to a lion and Nineveh to the lion's den, is brief but literary excellent. It ends with a mocking song about the prostitute Nineveh.

『旧約聖書』中の十二小預言書に属し、ユダの地エルコシ出身の預言者ナホムによる、アッシリアの首都ニネベ滅亡（前612年）の託宣預言である。わずか3章に及ぶ内容だが、1章12～2章1と3の断片的預言はそれより10年以上もさかのぼるものとされている。この部分を別にして、1章の「いろは歌」と2章は、罰すべきは罰する恵みの神の賛歌と、新バビロニア帝国によるニネベ陥落の預言である。アッシリアを獅子(しし)、ニネベをその獅子の穴に例えた預言詩は、簡潔ではあるが文学的にも優れたものである。遊女ニネベへの嘲笑(ちょうしょう)歌と結びで終わる。
