Obijime - Belt fastener

Japanese:
Obijime - Belt fastener

This refers to the cord used to shape and tie a women's obi in the Otaiko style. There are braided cords and cloth cords. The former are divided into two types: round braided Maruuchi and flat braided Hirauchi. They are the focal point of the overall color scheme of the kimono, including the obi, obiage, long kimono, and zori, and tighten the overall look. The cloth cord is called Maruguke, and is made by wrapping a core of cotton that is hard and rolled to a diameter of 1 to 2 centimeters in Habutae and quilting it. Thread tassels are attached to both ends. White is used for Tomesode, and white or black for mourning clothes, matching the color of the obiage. For wedding attire and celebratory attire for the Shichi-Go-San festival, Maruguke made of gold brocade and Nishiki is used. For young people and girls, scarlet habutae maruki is used. Wax-dyed leather and plain dyed leather are also used as a hobby. Obijime began to be used after the mid-Edo period, when obi widths became wider and the Taiko knot was tied when the reconstruction of the Taikobashi Bridge at Kameido Tenjin in Edo was completed in 1813 (Bunka 10). Before obijime, silver snap-on obidome were used, and later a method was adopted in which a metal fitting was passed through a thin, flat obijime and brought to the center front, with the knot of the string hidden inside the obi at the back. In the past, the distinction between obijime and obidome was not clear, but nowadays the distinction is made between the string alone and is referred to as obijime, and in recent years obijime have become more common.
