A Christian church that existed in the Nubian region in northeastern Africa, from south of Egypt along the Nile River to near Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. Nubia had long had contact with Egypt, and missionary work is thought to have already taken place in the 3rd and 4th centuries, but it was not until the 6th century that it really took off. At the time, there were three dynasties in Nubia, from the north to the south: Nobatia, Macria, and Alodia. Around this time in the Christian world, Monophysites were beginning to separate, mainly in Egypt, and the conflict between the Monophysites and the Chalcedonians was reflected in the missionary work in Nubia.
