...Inside the caldera lies Lake Usoriyama (Lake Osorezan), which is 2km in diameter and almost circular, and the Masatsu River flows into the Tsugaru Straits from the northeastern end as a crater rapid. The name Usori is said to be derived from the Ainu word "ushorō," meaning "a hollow," and the lake is home to a small number of acid-resistant Japanese dace. There are no records of eruptions, but there are numerous fumaroles and hot springs on the northern shore of Lake Usoriyama, and the nearby rocks have decomposed and changed to a yellowish-white color, and almost no plants grow there except for rhododendrons, creating a rather strange sight. ...

…カルデラの内側には直径2kmで，ほぼ円形の宇曾利山湖(恐山湖)があり，北東端から正津川が火口瀬となって津軽海峡に流出している。宇曾利はアイヌ語で〈くぼんだところ〉の意の〈ウショロ〉を語源とするといわれており，湖には酸に強いウグイがわずかに生息している。噴火の記録はないが，宇曾利山湖の北岸には多数の噴気孔や温泉があり，付近の岩石は黄白色に分解して変質しており，植物もシャクナゲ以外はほとんど育たず，一種異様な光景を現出している。…
