In ancient Rome, crickets were called cicada (nowadays meaning cicada) without distinction from other chirping insects, and they were thought to be insects in which only males chirped and lived by sucking dew. The custom of enjoying their chirping is currently popular in Greece and other Mediterranean regions, India, and Central and South America, and people also use it to obtain oracles, likening it to the voice of a god.
