This refers to countries whose borders have been divided by the political will of a major power, particularly those that were divided into East and West camps as a result of the Cold War. Examples include East and West Germany, North and South Korea, North and South Vietnam, and mainland China and Taiwan. Of these, North and South Vietnam were unified in July 1976 with the end of the Vietnam War, and East and West Germany were unified in October 1990 with the end of the Cold War. In Taiwan, the Kuomintang government has essentially reversed its policy of reunification by force (counterattacking the mainland) and replaced it with a government made up of "native Taiwanese" (born Taiwanese) from Taiwan, so the country is no longer as divided as it once was.
