Vestibular-ocular reflex

Japanese: 前庭動眼反射 - ぜんていどうがんはんしゃ（英語表記）vestibulo‐ocular reflex

Also known as the vestibulo-ocular reflex. When the head moves, the eyes move in the opposite direction to prevent blurring of the image of the outside world reflected on the retina, and this reflex works to ensure that vision does not become impaired when the head moves. When the vestibular organ in the inner ear detects head movement and fires a nerve signal, this is sent to the medulla oblongata via the vestibular nerve, relayed by the vestibular nucleus, and then transmitted to the motor neurons of the extraocular muscles that move the eyes. There are two types of relay neurons in the vestibular nucleus: excitatory and inhibitory. When one muscle contracts, the opposing muscle relaxes at the same time, causing the eyes to move in one direction.

前庭眼反射ともいう。頭が動いたときにこれと反対方向に眼球を動かして網膜に映る外界の像のぶれを防ぎ，頭が動いているときにものが見えにくくならぬように働く一種の反射である。内耳中の前庭器官が頭の動きを検出して神経信号を発射すると，これが前庭神経を介して延髄に送られ，前庭核で中継された後，眼球を動かす外眼筋の運動ニューロンへと伝えられる。前庭核内の中継ニューロンには興奮性と抑制性の2種類があり，一つの筋肉が収縮すると同時にこれと拮抗する筋肉が弛緩して眼球が一方向に動く仕組みになっている。
