German philosopher. Born on March 20th in Lichtenau near Kehl, he studied at the University of Heidelberg. He lectured in philosophy as a professor at Tohoku Imperial University from 1924 (Taisho 13) to 1929 (Showa 4), and after returning to Japan he became a professor at the University of Erlangen. He died in Partenkirchen in 1955. He first studied metaphysical problems and later Japanese Zen Buddhism, and his work Zen in Kyudo (1948) had a major impact on the West. He also wrote Matter and Form (1926) and Metaphysical Forms, Part I (1926), and edited and published the complete works of Rusk.
