An evergreen perennial plant of the Ranunculaceae family (APG classification: Ranunculaceae). Native to Europe, it was introduced to Japan in the early Meiji period. The rhizome is thick and short. The leaves are basal, 15-30 cm long, palmately compound, leathery, and dark green. There are 7-9 leaflets with sawtooth tips. The flower stalk is well branched and produces 1-3 flowers. The flower is 5-6 cm in diameter, but the petals are small, tubular, shorter than the stamens and less noticeable. The five sepals are large and beautifully petal-like, white when first blooming, later turning purple. The roots contain saponin and are used as a cardiac stimulant and diuretic. There are many varieties. Another species, H. orientalis Lam., is native to Southwest Asia and produces branched flower stalks with 3-6 flowers. The flowers are green or yellow-green with purple edges. It flowers in April and May, and most of the cultivated varieties are of this species. It is cold-resistant and prefers semi-shaded areas with good drainage. It is usually propagated by division in November, but it can also be propagated from seed. [Masao Inomata March 18, 2020] The petals are shorter than the stamens and inconspicuous, and the large five-petaled calyx forms a petal shape. When it first blooms, it is white, but later turns purple. The flowering season is from April to May. ©Shogakukan Photo by Masatoshi Hirose "> Christmas Rose Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
