Born on September 2, 1822. His family had been the headman of Tomida Village, Kazusa (Naruto Town, Chiba Prefecture) for generations. He abolished the bad practice of infanticide and raised many babies, earning him the nickname "Zenbei the Child-Raising Man." He also contributed to the introduction of sericulture and tea production. He passed away on March 12, 1894. He was 73 years old. His given name was Yasuzo.
