Pirate Blood

Japanese: 《海賊ブラッド》 - かいぞくぶらっど
Pirate Blood

…From the 1930s to the 1950s, pirate films flourished along with the other genre of sword fighting films, the chivalry film. Stars of pirate films include Errol Flynn (Pirate Blood, 1935; The Sea Hawk, 1940; Under All Flags, 1952), Tyrone Power (Conqueror of the Sea, 1942), Paul Henreid (The Pirate Barracuda, 1945), and Louis Hayward (The Tiger of the Mediterranean, 1949; The Pirate Captain, 1952), but modern drama stars such as Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, and Richard Widmark also appeared in pirate films. Female pirate stars such as Jean Peters (Anne the Pirate, 1951) and Maureen O'Hara (Under All Flags, 1952) emerged from the series, and musical versions such as The Dancing Pirates (1948) starring Gene Kelly and comedy versions such as The Great Treasure Island (1942) starring Abbott and Costello.

From Flynn

Born in Tasmania, he was expelled from schools in Australia and the UK several times, and from the age of 15 he aspired to be an explorer, moving from Sydney to New Guinea. In 1933, he appeared in an Australian semi-documentary film, which led him to England, where he played the lead role in a B-grade mystery film produced by the London branch of Warner Brothers, before moving to Hollywood in 1935. His success came when he replaced Robert Donat in Michael Curtiz's Blood (1935), and he gained popularity as a handsome action star. He reached the height of his popularity with Curtis's films The Dragoons (1936), The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), and The Sea Hawk (1940), and was included in the top ten of the Money-Making Stars. He continued to maintain his reputation in films such as Raoul Walsh's The Heroic Seventh Cavalry (1941) and Iron Man Jim (1942), but off screen he was known as the Hollywood Casanova and became a scandalous hero, and his drinking and drug use led to his decline in the late 1940s.
