Cultural science (English: Kulturwissenschaft) German

Refers to the various studies related to human culture in contrast to natural science, and is roughly synonymous with spiritual science. It has been used in the German ideological sphere since the end of the 19th century, but Windelband in particular distinguished between law-establishing natural science and individualistic historical science, and Rickert responded by saying that while natural science universalizes and establishes general laws of phenomena without regard for value, cultural science grasps the one-time particularity of events or their causal connections in an individualistic manner in relation to transcendental cultural values.

自然科学に対して人間文化に関する諸学をさし、精神科学とほぼ同義。19世紀末からドイツ思想圏で使用されたが、とくにウィンデルバントは、法則定立的な自然科学と個性記述的な歴史科学とを区別し、さらにリッケルトはこれを受けて、自然科学が現象の一般的法則を価値に無関心に普遍化的に定立するのに対して、文化科学は事象の一回的な特殊性ないしその因果連関を超越的な文化価値に関係して個性化的に把握するとした。
