...In modern terms, the idea is that the crust floats on the mantle. In contrast, J.H. Pratt (1811-71) believed that the density of the material that makes up high mountains is lower than that of the material that makes up low mountains, and that the depth of the interface between the mountain body and the material that keeps it floating is constant everywhere (Figure 1). Today, based on knowledge gained from the propagation of seismic waves and experiments with artificial earthquakes, Airy's model is closer to reality.
