... refers to the act of illegally seizing an aircraft or depriving it of its freedom of operation. It is also called hijacking. Hijacking originally meant the act of seizing a car or ship carrying smuggled alcohol or bootleg goods, which became common in the United States after the establishment of Prohibition in 1919.
