Kerama Islands - Keramaretto

Kerama Islands - Keramaretto

Okinawa Prefecture, Okinawa Islands are distributed about 20 to 40 kilometers west of Naha City, Okinawa Island, and consist of about 30 islands of various sizes. They are also called the Kerama Islands. They consist of two villages: Tokashiki Village (Mae Kerama), which consists of Tokashiki Island, Gishippu Island, Mae Island, Naka Island, Kuro Island, etc., and Zamami Village (Ato Kerama), which consists of Zamami Island, Aka Island, Geruma Island, Yakabi Island, Fukaji Island, Kuba Island, Amuro Island, etc. They belong to Shimajiri District. Between Tokashiki Island and Zamami Island is a waterway called the Kerama Strait.

The high islands are mountainous areas mainly made of mesozoic layers, and are made up of ria coasts with many bays, surrounded by fringing coral reefs. The mountainous areas retain subtropical natural forests, and are home to the Kerama deer, a nationally designated natural monument. In the past, the production of dried bonito and rice cultivation was popular, but after the return to the mainland in 1972, it developed into a tourist destination with guesthouses and other attractions. The entire archipelago is designated as the Kerama Islands National Park, which is mainly a marine park, and has beautiful coral reef scenery. Tokashiki Island, Zamami Island, and Aka Island are accessible by boat from Naha Tomari Port, and the archipelago is famous as an easily accessible remote island. During World War II, the US military's Okinawa landing operation (1945) began in these islands, and it is known as the place where many islanders were killed in battle. The Kerama Islands were registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland in 2005.
