Maruyama River

A first-class river that flows north through the central-western part of Hyogo Prefecture and empties into the Sea of ​​Japan. It originates near Maruyama in Ikuno-cho, Asago City, near the border between Tajima and Harima, flows north through the Tajima region, and empties into the Sea of ​​Japan at Tsuiyama in Toyooka City. It is 68 km long and has a drainage area of ​​1,300 square km. The valley widens north of Yabu City, forming the Toyooka Basin, a grain-producing region. It used to be an inlet up to this point, and even now it is so low-lying that seawater flows up to the confluence with the Izushi River at high tide, and the area has been plagued by flooding. Mulberry fields were cultivated in the river basin, and kiriyanagi (corbiculatus) for willow trunks was cultivated in the Toyooka Basin, but there is no trace of this now. In the early modern period, Takasebune boats were used for transport up to Yabusaki (Yabu City) in the middle reaches of the river.

兵庫県中西部を北流して日本海に注ぐ一級河川。但馬(たじま)・播磨(はりま)国境に近い朝来市(あさごし)生野(いくの)町円山付近に源を発して但馬地方を北流し、豊岡市(とよおかし)津居山(ついやま)で日本海へ注ぐ。延長68キロメートル。流域面積1300平方キロメートル。養父(やぶ)市以北では谷幅が広がり、穀倉地帯の豊岡盆地となる。かつてはここまで入り江で、いまも満潮時には出石(いずし)川との合流点まで海水が進入するほど低平であり、氾濫(はんらん)に悩まされてきた。流域では桑畑が、豊岡盆地では柳行李(やなぎごうり)用の杞柳(きりゅう)（コリヤナギ）が栽培されたが、現在そのおもかげはない。近世には中流の藪崎(やぶさき)（養父市）まで高瀬舟の舟運があった。
