A first-class river that flows north through the central-western part of Hyogo Prefecture and empties into the Sea of Japan. It originates near Maruyama in Ikuno-cho, Asago City, near the border between Tajima and Harima, flows north through the Tajima region, and empties into the Sea of Japan at Tsuiyama in Toyooka City. It is 68 km long and has a drainage area of 1,300 square km. The valley widens north of Yabu City, forming the Toyooka Basin, a grain-producing region. It used to be an inlet up to this point, and even now it is so low-lying that seawater flows up to the confluence with the Izushi River at high tide, and the area has been plagued by flooding. Mulberry fields were cultivated in the river basin, and kiriyanagi (corbiculatus) for willow trunks was cultivated in the Toyooka Basin, but there is no trace of this now. In the early modern period, Takasebune boats were used for transport up to Yabusaki (Yabu City) in the middle reaches of the river. [Mamoru Otsuki] "Kobe Shimbun Co., Ltd. Tajima General Bureau, ed.
