Yang Wanli

Japanese:
Yang Wanli

A poet of the Song Dynasty in China. His pen name was Tingxiu and his pen name was Seisai. He was from Jishui, Jizhou (Jishui County, Jiangxi Province). He was a Jinshi in 1154 (24th year of Shaoxing). He was a member of the resistance faction against the Jin Dynasty, and because of his inflexible personality and outspoken opinions of the government at the time, he was not promoted much in the central government and often moved between local offices. At the age of 36, he stopped imitating the poetry of the Jiangxi school and burned all his previous poems. After that, as his friend Louyaku said, "Each official should have one collection, and almost a thousand volumes have been circulated," he compiled a collection of poems for each post, and created over 3,000 poems up to his ninth collection, "Taikyu Collection." He expressed a wide range of subjects with slang-like ideas, forming a free and open style of poetry, saying, "All things come to me and offer me material for poetry," and he took pride in being a pure poet, singing, "I live and sleep, and if it is not poetry, I will not join in." He was one of the four great poets of the Southern Song Dynasty. He wrote the 132-volume "Seisaishu."
