When an electrolyte solution or molten salt is electrolyzed using chemically stable electrodes such as platinum, the current is extremely small (residual current) in the low voltage range, and increases exponentially above a certain voltage E D. This voltage E D is called the decomposition voltage. The value of E D does not have much theoretical significance, but it does have practical significance as the minimum voltage at which a significant amount of electrolysis begins to occur. The decomposition voltage is greater than the theoretical decomposition voltage.
