Hibiscus mutabilis (Hibiscus mutabilis)
A deciduous shrub of the Malvaceae family. It is found in Kyushu, the Ryukyu Islands, and southern China, and is widely cultivated in gardens. It grows to a height of 1.5-3 m and is covered with star-shaped hairs. The leaves are alternate and have 10-20 cm stalks. The leaf blade is pentagonal-cordate with 3-7 shallow lobes, and is 10-20 cm long and 10-20 cm wide. It flowers from August to September. The flowers are 7-13 cm in diameter with 5 petals, pale pink or rarely white, and in some cultivated species the flowers are white but turn pale pink when they wilt. The bases of the petals are fused, and the tip of the style is 5 lobed and topped with a round stigma. The fruit is 2.5-3 cm in diameter, spherical, covered with yellowish, stiff hairs, and splits into 5 pieces when ripe, scattering seeds with hairs on one side. The bark is used as a secondary material for Japanese paper.
