British zoologist, biostatistician, and author. After graduating from Cambridge University, he taught zoology in the UK, Canada, South Africa, and other countries. He was professor of zoology at the University of Birmingham from 1941 to 1947, and professor of medical statistics at the same university from 1947 to 1961. As a Fabian socialist, he wrote many books to raise awareness of science, including Mathematics for the Million (1936) and Citizen Science (1938), which had a major impact on the reform of science education after World War II.
