The largest carnivore and a mammal of the Ursidae family (illustration). Widely distributed in Europe, Asia, and North America. Size varies widely, with body length 170-280 cm, tail length 6-21 cm, and shoulder height 90-150 cm. The European brown bear U. a . arctos found in southern Europe weighs an average of 70 kg, while the northern Eurasian bear usually weighs 150-250 kg. The Kodiak bear ( Ursus middendorffi ) found on Kodiak Island on the southern coast of Alaska can reach up to 780 kg and a body length of 2.8 m.
