French classical organ music, which began with Jehan Titelouze (1563?-1633), reached its zenith during the reign of Louis XIV in the second half of the 17th century, and many composers, including N. Lebègue (1631-1702), F. Couperin, N. de Grigny (1672-1703), and L.-N. Clérambault (1676-1749), were active mainly in the chapel of the Palace of Versailles. The organ music of this period, which is rich in ornamental sounds, clearly shows the influence of the clubsin music of the court. …
