Labor markets are sometimes segmented into units such as region, occupation, type of labor force, company, or labor union. A labor market formed on an organizational basis, such as a company or labor union, is called an internal labor market. A typical internal labor market is one that is based on a corporate organization, and is called an intra-company labor market. The functions of an intra-company labor market are (1) to allocate jobs to workers employed within the company through intra-company labor movements such as hiring, transfer, promotion, demotion, and dismissal, and (2) to determine wages.

労働市場は，地域，職種，労働力のタイプ，企業，労働組合などを単位として細分化されていることがある。企業や労働組合のように，組織を単位として形成される労働市場を内部労働市場と呼ぶ。内部労働市場の典型は企業組織を単位としたものであり，これを企業内労働市場という。企業内労働市場の機能は，(1)採用，配置転換，昇進，降格，解雇などの企業内労働移動を通じて，職務を企業内に雇われている労働者に配分すること，そして(2)賃金を決定すること，にある。
