A priest in the royal court of ancient India. In India, the priesthood was monopolized by the Brahmins, and the highest position among them was the royal court priest, who performed various state ceremonies. In the texts transmitted by the Brahmins, it is repeatedly stated that without the existence of the Purohitas, the kingdom would not prosper. As advisors to the king, they could have influence in the politics of a country, and the position was generally hereditary.
