…Despite the resistance of the old powers, he worked hard to establish a customs union and build a railway network, which he used to form and unify the domestic market. After the establishment of the customs union, however, his focus shifted back to the defense of protectionism, and he began to argue for the position of protectionism from the perspective of the national economy. In “The Natural System of Political Economy” (1837), written in France, where he was temporarily in exile, and its development, “The National System of Political Economy” (1841), he systematized the theory of productive forces and argued for the necessity of protectionism for Germany, a developing country. His activities aimed at the establishment and independence of German capitalism were thwarted by persecution from the old powers, and in 1846, he committed suicide by shooting himself in Austria. …
