Upper Atmosphere Physics

Japanese: 超高層物理学 - ちょうこうそうぶつりがく

It is a science that studies the properties of the thin atmospheric space above the Earth's surface atmosphere (the troposphere and stratosphere, up to about 50 km above the ground, where phenomena directly related to the weather on the ground occur) that is dealt with in meteorology, and the phenomena that occur within that vast space, and should more properly be called upper atmosphere physics. Since meteorologists have long referred to the atmosphere up to several tens of kilometers above the ground as the upper atmosphere and the science that studies it as upper atmosphere physics, the new term upper atmosphere physics was coined when academic fields studying even higher regions emerged in the 1950s.

気象学で取り扱われている地球表層大気(地上の天気に直接関係する諸現象が起こっている対流圏と成層圏，地上約50km上空まで)よりもさらに上部にある希薄大気空間の性質と，その広大な空間内で生じている諸現象を研究する学問であり，正しくは超高層大気物理学と呼ばれるべきである。古くから気象研究者の間で，地上数十kmまでの大気を高層大気，それを研究する学問を高層物理学と呼んでいたので，さらに高い領域を研究する学問分野が1950年代に勃興したときに超高層物理学という新語が生まれた。
