Wang Xiao-tong (English spelling)

Japanese: 王孝通 - おうこうつう（英語表記）Wáng Xiào tōng

A mathematician who was a doctor of arithmetic and calendar during the Wude period (618-626) in the early Tang Dynasty in China, and who became the Chief Historian. Dates of birth and death unknown. One of his works is the "Ji Gu Suan Jing" (Shuko Sankei), one of the "Ten Books on Suan Jing." It contains a total of 20 problems, 19 of which use the open zone dependent solution method (a method for finding the positive roots of cubic equations) to explain how to solve problems such as problems for finding the volume of embankments and complex cubic problems (application of Pythagoras' theorem for right-angled triangles), making it the oldest mathematical book for solving cubic equations.

中国，唐初の武徳年間(618‐626)の算暦博士で，太史丞となった数学者。生没年不詳。著書に《算経十書》の一つ《緝古算経（しゆうこさんけい）》がある。問題は全部で20術収められており，そのうちの19術までが開帯従立方法(三次方程式の正根を求める方法)を利用して，堤防などの体積を求める問題，および複雑な勾股（こうこ）問題(直角三角形におけるピタゴラスの定理の応用)を解く方法を説いたものであり，三次方程式を解いた最古の数学書である。
