Cherrapunji (English spelling)

A village in the southern part of Meghalaya state in northeastern India. It is located about 56 km southwest of Shillong, on the southern slope of the Khasi Hills. It was the district government office for a time until the capital was moved to Shillong in 1864. The inhabitants are mainly Khasi people. It is an area with heavy monsoon rainfall, with an annual rainfall of 22,987 mm recorded in 1861. With an average annual rainfall of 10,060 mm, it is one of the rainiest areas in the world. Rice is cultivated using terraced cultivation, and fruits such as bananas, pineapples, plums, and citrus fruits are produced. Population: 7,883 (1991).
