Hanayama Innagachika

Japanese: 花山院長親 - かざんいんながちか
Hanayama Innagachika

A poet of the Northern and Southern Courts and early Muromachi period. His name was Shinmei-Gi (Shishin Myogi). He was also called Koun or Koun Sanjin (Sanjin). He was the grandson of Morokata (Prince Bunjo), a loyal retainer of Emperor Godaigo, and the son of Iekata (Minister of the Interior at Myokoji Temple). He first followed in his father's footsteps and served the Southern Court, eventually becoming Minister of the Interior. During that time, he participated in the "300 Southern Court Poetry Contests" and "500 Southern Court Poetry Contests," composed "Koun Senshu," and was also involved in the compilation of the "Shinyo Wakashu," and his collection included 25 poems, including "Tears that have not dried for three years, how can they stain my wisteria robe?" (a poem written on the occasion of the death of Emperor Murakami, two years after his father's death). He retired to Kyoto in the final period of the Northern and Southern Courts and became a monk. During the Oei period (1394-1428), he lived in seclusion in Higashiyama. He was eventually trusted by Shogun Yoshimochi and accompanied him to Ise, writing the travelogue Koun Kiko. He died in July 1212. His poetry treatise Koun Kuden was influenced by Song Dynasty poetry theory and Zen, and he also wrote handwritten copies of The Tale of Genji and other classics.
